The U18s booked their place in the Second Round of The FA Youth Cup sponsored by E.ON thanks to a penalty shoot-out success over Boston United at Sincil Bank Stadium on Monday evening.

With the scores locked at 2-2 at the end of normal time and extra-time, it was down to spot kicks with City right-back Jamie McCormack firing home the decisive effort to take the Imps through 5-4 on penalties, A trip to Oldham Athletic is their reward.

Match report by John Vickers at Sincil Bank Stadium:

It was a crisp November evening at Sincil Bank and it was a fast and frenetic start to proceedings with both sets of players out to make their mark in the opening stages.

In the second minute, Gary King latched on to a forward ball from Danny Hone only to slice his effort wide of the mark whilst the Pilgrims won the first corner of the game in the eighth minute when Mensah Omari Kinch saw his cross clip Adam Hewitt before going behind.

City dealt with the flag-kick though and were quick to respond with King sending a diving header from an Andrew Hutchinson cross a foot wide of the post. Under-16 striker Hutchinson then warmed the hands of Boston 'keeper Aaron Butcher with a low drive from the edge of the box as the Imps pressed again whilst on the quarter hour mark the City U16 front man had a shot blocked on the line by Nicky Jackson after he was picked out by strike partner King.

A couple of City corners as the Imps upped the tempo again and from the second one, in the 17th minute, the Imps grabbed a deserved lead. Martin Pembleton took the set-piece to the near post and in nipped King to power home a header via the inside of the post.

Boston looked for a quick response with a dangerous James Davies corner flicking a Lee Welburn's head before going behind whilst a late challenge from Liam Bull on Chris Baker gave the Pilgrims a chance from a free-kick but City stood firm again.

After soaking up some Boston pressure, City went for the jugular and, in the 33rd minute, they doubled their advantage courtesy of a top quality finish from King.

Receiving the ball from Hutchinson on the right, King took a touch to bring the ball under control, looked up and set his sights and then pulled the trigger from 25 yards with his left-foot bullet flying past Butcher and into the top corner of the net.

City kept pushing Boston on to the back foot, forcing two more corners whilst Hone was unlucky not to get any purchase on a header from a Hewitt free-kick and Hutchinson fired a snap shot straight at Butcher.

The second half began with U16 Kern Miller replacing James Cooper for City but it was the Imps' defence who had to be on their guard in the opening stages after the restart with Omari Kinch creating space for himself before firing just over from a tight angle.

A Lee Beeson cross was then headed onto the roof of his own net by Welburn before Omari Kinch was tripped by Hone inches outside the box. A yellow card for the City defender and a free-kick to the Pilgrims was the outcome with Davies firing well over when he was allowed to take the set-piece.

On the hour mark, Hone was on hand to clear the ball after Luke Baxter palmed away a Beeson shot whilst at the other end substitute Miller fired into the side netting after a deep centre from Hewitt landed at his feet.

Hewitt then followed Hone into the book for a high challenge on Beeson and after he received treatment the Boston wide man tested Baxter with a left-foot shot from just inside the box.

At the other end Hutchinson was denied a run on goal thanks to an excellent saving challenge from the back-tracking Davies whilst good work from Pembleton saw him force a corner on the left which was headed wide by Hone.

A neat touch from Hutchinson then saw him wrong-foot his marker before he fired over whilst a dangerous Garrick centre forced the Pilgrims defence to concede another corner which was cleared by the visiting defence.

With 10 minutes on the clock Pembleton fired a long range effort onto the roof of the net but the Pilgrims responded by pulling a goal back when a deep free-kick from Nicky Jackson was helped on by Mitchell Griffiths for Adam Millson to prod home from close range.

With four minutes remaining Hutchinson made way for Ryan Limb and shortly after this switch a deep Davies free-kick evaded a packed penalty area before bouncing a foot wide.

Two minutes into stoppage time, Boston drew level when a long ball forward from Marc Day found right-back Griffiths who, after exchanging passes with Beeson looked up and planted an excellent effort into the top corner to take the game into extra-time.

Under-16 centre-back Connor Fitzpatrick replaced Danny Hone prior to the start of extra-time and he was quickly in defensive action as Day headed a Davies corner over the bar before Baxter saved a Millson shot with his legs.

At the other end Garrick came off the worst in a challenge with Jackson but was able to carry on after treatment whilst Alex Beck had an effort ruled out for Boston after he took the ball out of Baxter's hands after he claimed a cross from the right.

Good control by Ryan Limb saw him create a half chance for himself only for Michael Wood to throw himself in the way of his shot and this proved to be the final action of the opening period of extra-time.

In the opening stages following the restart, Limb hit the side netting and Welburn fizzed a long-ranger inches wide whilst at the other end a questionable corner gave the Pilgrims a chance from a set-piece. When Davies swung the ball in, Beck headed against the bar and over for a goal-kick.

Millson then fired just over after a long throw-in from Thompson landed at his feet whilst Boston forced two more corners as they went in search of a late winner. As City responded King was denied a run on goal when the referee brought play back for a foul on McCormack.

A minute into added time, Jon Fairweather replaced Marc Day for the Pilgrims and this proved to be the final action with penalties now set to decide who will travel to Oldham Athletic in the second round.
