Memories Of 1967 Come Flooding Back
Today's Carling Cup draw saw City paired with Derby County for the third time in the competition and will bring back memories for many supporters of 1967 and a record attendance at Sincil Bank.
The Imps were first drawn against the Rams in the League Cup in 1967 having disposed of Mansfield Town, Newcastle United and Torquay United to reach the fourth round.
Second Division Derby, who had the newly appointed Brian Clough as manager, entertained Ron Gray's City in front of over 25,000 supporters at the Baseball Ground in what the Lincolnshire Echo described as a "sizzling soccer night".
Having gone a goal down after just 14 minuttes when Welsh international Alan Durban played in Richie Barker who beat John Kennedy at the second attempt but the the Imps rallied and after Jack Lewis had an effort controversially ruled out by the linesman, Lew Thom headed a John Gregson cross past Reg Matthews with 15 minutes on the clock.
The 1-1 draw saw the two teams meet a fortnight later at Sincil Bank and a record home attendance of 23,196 braved torrential rain for the replay. In fact the rain was so persistent that during the first half groundsman Ned Pinkstone was called on to the pitch to sweep water from the Railway End goalmouth!
The game ended 3-0 to Derby thanks to two goals from John O'Hare and one from Kevin Hector, but the match will probably be best remembered for the fact that City defender Mick Brown gave Hector a close look at his forehead with seven minutes remaining.
Brown was dismissed by referee Jim Carr, the free-kick was taken two minutes later and seconds after that a bleeding Hector netted Derby's second to put the game beyond City's reach, booking a quarter final tie against Darlington in the process.
Turn the clock forward to August 2004 and the sides were once again drawn against each other but this time it was City who left it late to secure a victory as goals from Gary Taylor-Fletcher, Simon Yeo and Jamie McCombe saw the Imps book a second round trip to Birmingham City after Inigo Idiakez had given the Rams a first half lead.
