A second half brace from Nottingham Forest striker Nathan Tyson was enough to knock the Imps out of the FA Cup sponsored by E.ON at The City Ground.
Forest opened the scoring in the First Round Replay 10 minutes before the break when Kris Commons drilled past Alan Marriott from the edge of the box before a brace from Tyson early on in the second half sealed the victory for the once-famous Nottingham side.
The former Wycombe striker bagged his first in the 49th minute when he fired across Marriott whilst his second came when he bundled home from close range after Arron Davies crossed from the right.
Jamie Forrester bagged what turned out to be a consolation effort for the Imps with 18 minutes on the clock but despite some late City pressure they couldn't find another way past home stopper Paul Smith and in the end the 2,229 strong band of travelling fans left disappointed.
Match report by John Vickers at The City Ground:
With goalkeeper Ben Smith ruled out as he didn't sign for City prior to to the original tie of this FA Cup sponsored by E.ON, back came Alan Marriott in between the sticks.
Whilst Marriott for Smith was the only change to the starting XI, there were two other changes on the bench where Forest loanee Hamza Bencherif made way for Phil Watt whilst Ayden Duffy was also back in the fold.
It was a pleasant evening as the teams made their way out of the tunnel, with the Imps backed by over 2,100 supporters for the first competitive match between Forest and the Imps at The City Ground for 50 years.
City, in their change strip of white shirts and red shorts, kicked off attacking the virtually empty Trent End and they were quickly on the attack with Lee Frecklington breaking from midfield before seeing his goalbound shot crash against a Forest defender before bouncing away from a team mate.
It was a bright opening by the Imps but it was Forest who had the first shot on target with Arron Davies forcing Alan Marriott to tip his 25-yard shot wide for a corner.
Shortly after this, Nathan Tyson wasted a great chance when he fired well over following adrag back by Chris Cohen whilst the hosts' next attack saw Danny Hone get in a timely block to deny Tyson a shot on target.
City replied by winning a couple of corners whilst a Forest corner saw Paul Green deny Tyson and from the Imps next attack, some good link-up play ended with Owain Warlow seeing his final effort deflect wide. Frecklington swung the ball in from the quadrant but Adie Moses could only direct his header over the bar.
A third Forest corner, shortly after the midway point in the first half, gave them a chance but Gary Croft was well positioned to head clear as the ball came in. City responded with Ben Wright being barged in the back for an Imps free-kick.
City continued to press on the half-hour mark with Louis Dodds denied by a saving challenge by Julian Bennett, who required treatment for his troubles after sliding in to deflect the Imps' man's shot out for a corner which was subsequently cleared at the near post after Warlow shipped the ball in.
Forest immediately went up the other end and won a corner of their own and before it could be took, Bennett was replaced by James Perch.
In the 35th minute Forest struck with a goal out of nothing.
The opener came when Kris Commons picked up possession on the right and he set his sights early with his low, fizzing drive flying past Alan Marriott's left hand before nestling in the corner of the net.
A minute after the restart Frecklington was booked despite appearing to take the ball as he challenged Cohen whilst four minutes before the break Adie Moses hobbled off holding his hamstring to be replaced by Phil Watt alongside Danny Hone.
Marriott then saved from Davies at his near post whilst at the other end Frecklington saw his volley on the turn held by Forest 'keeper Paul Smith.
Two Forest corners followed before the hosts won two more corners as they looked to double their advantage before the interval. Two minutes of added time was then indicated and midway through the added minutes a City attack ended with Paul Green firing well over and this proved to be the final action of the opening period.

Whilst Forest remained unchanged, a change for the Imps prior to the restart saw Dany N'Guessan replace Louis Dodds and he was quickly in the action, clearing a dangerous Davies cross away to safety.
The Imps were now attacking the end behind which sat the 2,200 strong band of travelling fans and they were on their feet three minutes after the restart when Forrester looked to have been bundled to the ground by Wes Morgan in the box only for referee Andy Woolmer to wave play on.
Within a minute, the hosts were two up when a ball forward found Nathan Tyson who shrugged off substitute Watt before neatly slotting the ball across Marriott and into the opposite corner of the net.
City looked to respond and Ben Wright was denied a clear run on goal by an offside flag even though the big Imps' striker was a yard behind his marker as he timed his run from Warlow's pass to perfection. Forest immediately made the most of this let off by forcing a corner at the other end whilst when the ball was cleared Warlow was dragged to the deck by Lewis McGugan who was booked for his troubles.
From the free-kick N'Guessan headed wide before Forest won their ninth corner of the evening and shortly after this Morgan headed a Cohen free-kick well over after the centre-back went down somewhat theatrically under N'Guessan's challenge.
Tyson then added his second of the game and with 61 minutes played when he latched on to a Davies centre before seeing his effort from six yards trickle over the line as Green tried to clear.
Lenny John-Lewis then came on for Owain Warlow whilst good work from N'Guessan saw him win a corner on the right before Danny Hone required treatment after Commons left his foot in on the teenage City defender.
With all three substitutions having been made there was a worried look on the face of manager Peter Jackson as Hone received treatment from Michael Wait and the youngster looked to be in some discomfort as he hobbled to the touchline.
As hone limped back in, Frecklington forced Smith to save low to his left before N'Guessan fired wide after the resultant corner came in. Good work from John-Lewis saw him win another flag-kick as the game entered its final quarter.
Hone looked to be in some considerable discomfort as Junior Agogo came on for Commons in the 71st minute and the former City man could only look on as current City man Jamie Forrester then jinked his way forward before prodding goalwards, the ball trickling slowly over the line to reduce the deficit to two with 18 minutes on the clock.
Forest seemed to stifle City as they looked for further success during the following eight minutes whilst a questionable offside flag against the overlapping Croft certainly didn't help matters as the Imps went in search of a second.
A foul on N'Guessan received a rapturous reception from the travelling fans and when Green pumped in the free-kick the hosts were happy to hack behind for a corner. The flag-kick was subsequently volleyed well over by Green after Frecklington played the ball in.
City continued to press but the final ball just wouldn't run as the game entered its final five minutes; a shot by Forrester which flew a foot over in the final minute being the closest they came to adding a second.
In the first of three added minutes, Marriott palmed a McGugan shot behind for a corner whilst a minute later Ben Wright won City a corner of their own but Forest scrambled clear.
The hosts seemed happy to eat up the seconds, winning another corner in the dying seconds, and this proved to be the final action as the Imps once again bowed out of the world's most famous cup competition at the first hurdle.
