Goalkeeper David Felgate initially joined the Imps on loan from Bolton Wanderers in September 1980 as replacement for broken leg victim Colin Boulton and his form soon earned him a permanent move to Sincil Bank, with the Welshman keeping 23 clean sheets from his 42 games in the 1980/81 season as the Imps clinched promotion to Division Three as runners-up to Southend United.

Blaenau Ffestiniog-born Felgate missed just three games in the next three seasons whilst, on October 12th 1983, he became the first City man for 25 years to receive international recognition, when he represented his country in a friendly against Romania. He replaced Neville Southall at half-time in a game which Wales won 5-0 at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.

After making a total of 233 appearances in all competitions for the Imps, Felgate - who was twice named in the PFA Division Three 'Team of the Season' and once as the Imps' 'Player of the Season' - moved to Grimsby Town in the summer of 1985 for £27,500 - his last match for City being the tragic day at Bradford on the final day of the 1984/85 season.

Felgate's League record for City was impressively consistent as, from his 198 games, he let in just 197 goals - one goal every 90.21 minutes. Only Eric McManus (13 goals conceded in 21 games at an average of one goal every 145.38 minutes) and Ian Bowling (58 goals conceded in 59 games at an average of one goal every 91.55 minutes) have a better record.

Felgate returned to Bolton two years later and went on to make almost 300 appearances for the club who gave him his break in football and, after spells with Chester City and Wigan Athletic, he drifted into the non-League scene and played a major part in Leigh RMI's FA Cup run, which included a goalless draw against Kevin Keegan's Fulham in November 1998.

Felgate's last action saw him turn out for Bacup Borough in the North West Counties League Division One at the age of 45 whilst these days he coaches for both Manchester City and Stockport County whilst he's also involved in goalkeeping coaching schools in the Lancashire area.
