An England international, winning one cap in 1939 against Norway alongside the likes of Stanley Matthews and Tommy Lawton, Doug Wright had been wounded in the leg during the Second World War and it was felt that his career in top class football was over.
Wright, who played 32 times for Southend United and 72 times for Newcastle United prior his arrival at Sincil Bank, turned out to be an inspirational signing by Bill Anderson however, and was perhaps the classiest of all City's players in the post-war period.
A real football artist with immaculate ball control, superb timing in the tackle and an excellent reader of the game, Wright captained the side from his second game until his departure in December 1954 - a six year stint when the Imps fielded one of the strongest teams in their history.
After departing Sincil Bank, Wright went on to play for and manage Blyth Spartans before becoming their secretary and after retiring from the game, he was reported to be working on Tyneside docks and was later employed by the CEGB at Blyth Power Station.
Doug Wright died in December 1992 at the age of 75.
