Airdrie-born midfielder Bobby Cumming had chalked up over 350 appearances for Grimsby Town prior to his arrival at Sincil Bank in the summer of 1987 and his acquisition turned out to be an inspirational one by manager Colin Murphy as he set out to mastermind City's return to the Football League following their relegation to the Conference.
Whilst he only went on to appear 41 times in the Football League for City, Cumming's influence during the 1987/88 Conference campaign was immense with his wholehearted performances seeing him crowned as 'Player of the Season' by the Imps' supporters at the end of the season.
The Conference title, clinched courtesy of a final day victory over Wycombe Wanderers in front of a then record Conference title, was just reward for Cumming and Murphy, who managed to prise him away from Grimsby.
Cumming had spent 14 years with the Mariners but when his contract came to an end in 1987 and hopes of a move to a club in the United States failed to materialise, in stepped Murphy and the rest, they say, is history.
After spending the summer of 1988 in upstate New York with Albany Capitals, the Scot returned to Sincil Bank and played 29 League games in City's first season back in the Football League.
He was a regular at the start of the 1989/90 season but an ankle injury sustained in an FA Cup First Round tie against Billingham Synthonia in November 1989 spelled the end of his League career.
He never played in City's first team again and after turning down the chance of a coaching role with the Imps, he played for Grimsby Borough before returning to the States and Albany Capitals, who included the likes of USA international John Harkes in their squad.
Retirement from the game followed and, with an American wife, he made the decision to settle in the States.
