Left-sided midfielder Peter Gain came through the youth ranks at Tottenham Hotspur but despite helping the North London club reach the FA Youth Cup Final and becoming a regular in their reserves, he couldn't find a way into the senior team at White Hart Lane.
The former Republic of Ireland youth and U21 international joined the Imps on loan in December 1998 and the move was made permanent three months later for a fee of £15,000.
He had to bide his time for a regular slot in the City starting line-up though but went on to establish himself as one of the most talented players in the lower divisions.
Skilful on the ball and with an eye for a spectacular goal, Gain was a virtual ever-present as City reached the 2002/03 Division Three Play-Off Final whilst he only missed a handful of games the following season as the Club missed out on a second successive trip to the Millennium Stadium at the final hurdle.
Despite netting 12 goals over those two seasons, Gain failed to find the target in 2004/05 - his final campaign with the Imps - with his final appearance in a City shirt coming in the 2005 Play-Off Final defeat to Southend United.
Gain turned down the offer of a new contract to pen a three-year deal with Peterborough United shortly afterwards.
