After serving his apprenticeship with Sunderland and following brief spells with Scunthorpe United and Seaham Red Star, goalkeeper Barry Richardson made his first class debut for Scarborough in 1989.

Following a short spell at Stockport County, Richardson joined Northampton Town in 1991 and went on to make 113 appearances for the Cobblers before Preston North End paid £20,000 for his services three years later.

Richardson became John Beck's first signing as manager and he made his debut alongside fellow new boy Steve Holmes in a 1-0 home defeat to Cardiff City in October 1995 and went on to be an ever-present in the League over the remainder of the season.

He turned out to be a popular, if sometimes eccentric, goalkeeper over the following four seasons and whilst he played his part in the Club's promotion season of 1997/98, keeping 12 clean sheets from his 26 League appearances, he was best remembered for his part in an infamous brawl at Macclesfield Town in April 1998.

Along with future Imp Ben Sedgemore, Richardson was sent off for his part in a 22-man brawl and, along with Jason Barnett and Lee Thorpe, received a subsequent misconduct charge from the Football Association.

In 1999 his City career seemed to be over as he vied for the number one jersey with John Vaughan and he had a brief loan spell with Mansfield Town only to return and make a further 26 appearances for the Imps.

The emergence of Alan Marriott eventually saw Richardson depart for pastures new and after a spell on loan with the then Premiership outfit Sheffield Wednesday, he joined the then Conference side Doncaster Rovers on a free transfer.

In 2001 he returned to the League with Halifax Town, making 24 appearances before returning to Doncaster via a spell with Gainsborough Trinity.

He made two appearances for Rovers in the LDV Vans Trophy in 2003 whilst two similar appearances two years later - which came after he had a short spell with Nottingham Forest - ended in agony when he suffered a broken leg in a 3-2 defeat at Cambridge United.

Still registered as a player with Doncaster, Richardson is now on the coaching staff at Belle Vue, and has been an unused substitute on a number of occasions this season.
