Jeff Smith was a quietly efficient defender who showed skill and a high degree of consistency in a nine-year spell at Sincil Bank.
One of the few players to remain throughout the early 1960's when the Imps dropped from the Second Division to the bottom of the Fourth, Smith was eventually released on a free transfer by Ron Gray in the summer of 1967.
He made just one Football League appearance during his time with Sheffield United whilst he scored just twice from his 351 League and cup games for the Imps, at home to Middlesbrough in April 1961 and at Halifax Town in February 1966.
