Phil Turner first joined the Imps as a 14-year-old when he was spotted playing for Sheffield Rangers, a Junior Sunday League side having previously had trials for Sheffield Boys.
After impressing in the schoolboy sides, Turner was handed an apprenticeship and less thank three weeks after celebrating his 18th birthday he was making his Football League debut in right midfield in a 4-0 home win over Wigan Athletic.
The youngest of seven children, Turner went on to become a regular shortly after signing professional terms and also picked up the Young Player of the Season award on three occasions.
A virtual ever-present in his final three seasons with the Club having missed a large chunk of the 1981/82 season due to an ankle injury, Turner made a total of 239 League appearances for City, scoring 19 times.
The only Imp to make his full Football League bow on Leap Year Day, Turner departed Sincil Bank for Grimsby Town in August 1986 in exchange for Gary Lund and a £42,000 move to Leicester City followed a couple of years later. But it was with Notts County where Turner would end his League career.
Turner spent seven years with the Meadow Lane outfit, playing over 300 times in all competitions and twice being named as their Player of the Season. He was also their skipper as successive promotions saw them enjoy a brief spell in the top flight in 1991/92.
Following his retirement from the professional game, Turner worked in Community Care in Derbyshire but returned to Lincolnshire at the start of the 2004/05 season, being named assistant manager at Grantham Town.
His time with the Gingerbreads was short, however, as following the resignation of manager Dave Norton in September 2004, he left the Club. During his brief spell at Grantham a 42-year-old Turner appeared as a substitute against Chesham United.
